Daily Green Actions: 26 Nov 2007

  • Gave up after 10 minutes of stalking the trees where I know the owl hangs out. Next time I shall record the call and get it identified
  • today's light out I shall go owl "hunting" :) Hopefully I can finally see the owl I hear so often every evening
  • the time is 7pm and the resident spotted wood owl is out and about, right on time, with its resonating hoot, reminding me its lights out!
  • resisted shopping at kinokuniya but took a cab to the environment talk which was rather disappointing.
  • The My Paper article about recycling is out. Sounds ok. Uploaded pdf on server http://tinyurl.com/28v9tm
  • Going for a talk by Frank Macdonald, Irish Times Environment Editor on Media and the environment at 12 noon, SIIA House.
  • Finally turned the aircon on after 2 weeks of abstinence. the weather has simply gotten unbearably hot and humid. sigh

matt, unfortunately it is against my beliefs to flash torchlight to find birds. it's just too bad for me then. that's why i can never be a birder. it's not my imperative to see the bird. im going to try to record its call. that's more fun for me. if i can get the call identified then i can just go happily look at a photo of it haha sorry im just not going to upset an owl just to satisfy my own desire to see its face. call me silly but oh well

btw ive been calling out to this bird and having it reply me for almost 1-2 years now. i have a strong affinity for this bird and i definitely don't want to do something rude like flashing a torchlight at it. this is not a zoo.

most of the people in singapore live in highrise apartments. we don't have the luxury of a backyard

Your blog is cool! An owl cries in my roof every night and i also wanted to know what species it is. Today I got to know it is an Aegolius harrisii, a small owl, of about 20 cm:
