Is there air pollution in Singapore?

This is a presentation I did for my Environmental Management and Assessment class which I subsequently got encouragingly good grades. It is in line with the air pollution series of posts I wrote on Metroblogging Singapore after witnessing disturbing emissions from oil refineries and power plants in the west of Singapore.

Now with Google Presentations, you can view my presentations with ease.

I was in HongKong couple of weeks back and the headline in South China Morning Post screamed of HK expats moving to Singapore trying to escape the haze there. I think compared to some of the south east asian capitals and several cities in middle and south China, Singapore seems to have clearer air and sky.

I guess this is the limitations of Google Presentations. I can upload my slides but you would not have heard the things I said which were left unwritten.

In 2005, Singapore was ranked #1 as best location in Asia for expatriates to live and work above Tokyo and Hong Kong due to better air quality.

Here's another article that talk about the bad air in HK. http://tinyurl.com/2uq39o

Yes, comparatively, and even on its own, Singapore's air quality is fantastic. But that doesn't mean we don't have pollution. As the police likes to say, low crime doesn't mean no crime. Low pollution doesn't mean no pollution.

Even MEWR's state of environment report stated a rise in Sulphur Dioxide emission.

And sometimes, things like carbon emission have long term effect which doesn't "harm" us like bad air quality does but still a major environmental concern especially in light of climate change.
